Future Memorials and Healesville Sanctuary Joint Tour

Details for the Future Memorials and Spirit of the Land TarraWarra Museum of Art/Healesville Sanctuary Combined Tour

Two tours will be held, Sunday 12 January 2014 and Sunday 19 January 2014.

The tour will be begin at 2pm at TarraWarra Museum of Art, and continue at 3pm at the Healesville Sanctuary. Attendees will make their own way to Healesville Sanctuary.

The afternoon begins with a tour of the exhibition Future Memorials at TarraWarra Museum of Art, exploring the fascinating history of the Wurundjeri people and the former Coranderrk Aboriginal Station. Visitors will then have a unique opportunity to take aSpirit of the Land Indigenous walking tour at Healesville Sanctuary.

Healesville Sanctuary recently unveiled a commemorative life-sized sculpture of the great Wurundjeri Ngurungaeta (leader) William Barak to mark the 110th anniversary of his passing. The bronze sculpture, titled Between Two Worlds, depicts a man caught between two worlds but able to bridge both, as an ambassador for his people and protector of Wurundjeri traditions and culture at Coranderrk.

The Healesville Sanctuary component of the tour will be led by Wurundjeri Elder Murrindindi, beginning at Barak’s statue then following a natural bushland trail to a Dreaming Place for storytelling where a majestic 250 year old canoe tree proudly stands.

Visitors then continue on to another pathway where the story of the former Coranderrk Aboriginal Station continues to unfold. They will experience emotive soundscapes through the voices of elders past and present, the descendants of Barak, who reflect on the inspiring Aboriginal leader and tell their own family stories of Coranderrk, passed down through generations.
