Melbourne Festival: Whisper in My Mask

Sunday 19 October 2014
11AM-6PM

Taking its cue from the evocative lyrics of Grace Jones’s ‘Art Groupie’, Whisper in My Mask explores the many masks we wear in our lives.

Social, emotional, spiritual or digital: the masks we choose offer protection, beauty or anonymity. They can obscure our identities and emotions – or liberate them.

Featuring specially commissioned works from more than 20 of Australia’s most vital contemporary Aboriginal and non-Indigenous artists, this is a compelling, wide-ranging exploration of identity and concealment.

With a program spanning the breadth of the visual arts and including a day of performance and interactive events curated especially for Melbourne Festival, Whisper in My Mask offers a cross-generational, multidisciplinary perspective on one of humanity’s most primal instincts.

Artists include boat-people, Daniel Boyd, Søren Dahlgaard, Destiny Deacon & Virginia Fraser, Karla Dickens, Fiona Foley, Tony Garifalakis, Sandra Hill, Gabriella Mangano and Silvana Mangano, Romaine Moreton, Nasim Nasr, Polixeni Papapetrou, Elizabeth Pedler, Sangeeta Sandrasegar, The Telepathy Project (Veronica Kent and Sean Peoples), The Tjanpi Desert Weavers Project with Fiona Hall.

TarraWarra Biennial presents a special one-day program of performances, talks and interactive events curated especially for Melbourne Festival.
