Playing in the tensions between the imposed and the improvised.

Join us for a live performance featuring a remarkable ensemble of eight musicians, each a distinctive musical voice in their own right.

This collaborative event explores the space between structure and spontaneity, presenting new improvised works alongside reinterpreted compositions inspired by the ideas and artistic expressions within the exhibition System Release.

Curated by multi-instrumentalist and composer Rosie Westbrook, the performance continues her long-standing practice of creating immersive live music responses to visual art. Bringing together artists from diverse musical traditions, the ensemble will create evolving soundscapes that respond to the exhibition’s themes, atmospheres and conceptual tensions.

Artists

Rosie Westbrook — electric guitar / basses

Widely acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, composer and performer Rosie Westbrook is renowned for creating music that is hauntingly evocative, spacious and inherently cinematic.

Alongside her solo practice, Rosie has performed with numerous contemporary music artists. Her work maintains a long-standing engagement with visual art, including composing soundtracks for art documentaries and developing live performance installations inspired by visual artists.

Her mesmeric performances with double bass and guitars in galleries and museums across Europe and Australia have elevated many exhibitions, responding to the rhythms, moods and spatial qualities of the works on display. Collaborations with equally empathetic composers exploring emotive musical soundscapes remain central to her practice.

John Phillips — guitars

John Phillips is a sound designer, musician and soundscape artist.

Originally reluctant to take up the guitar as his primary instrument, Phillips later rediscovered it as a powerful tool for creating expansive sonic environments. He has worked extensively across film scores, sound installations, documentary soundtracks and theatrical compositions both in Australia and internationally.

Phillips has collaborated with numerous artists including members of the influential group Not Drowning, Waving, and has maintained a long-term creative partnership with Rosie Westbrook. His work as a producer includes the Not Drowning, Waving catalogue and many other recordings. He received an ARIA Award for producing the soundtrack to the acclaimed Australian film Proof.

Kaye-Louise Patterson is a piano based singer-songwriter with a classical music background. After majoring in composition at La Trobe University, Kaye-Louise went on to perform with a diverse range of musicians and has long had a passion for exploring the relationship between art and music.

Kaye-Louise’s song writing also includes composing original music to poetry and this will be featured on her forthcoming album. Produced by David Bridie this recording features John Phillips and Rosie Westbrook and is due for release later this year.

Kaye is currently drawing from visual and textual prompts to inspire new musical works. This includes her composition “To Walk Backwards Into The Future” where she will explore thematic relationships between Time, History and Song.

Beginning his musical career in Iran in 1998, he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional technical skill and expressive performances, receiving state and national awards including second place as a tar soloist in Iran’s largest solo competition.

Sean Kelly — synthesizer / guitars

Sean Kelly’s career spans bandleader, vocalist, guitarist, film and television composer, sound designer and software developer.

Through his project Doppelgänger, Kelly creates immersive musical environments that combine acoustic instruments with digital and generative sound systems. His performances explore atmospheric textures and evolving sonic forms that challenge perception.

Kelly is a multi-ARIA Award recipient and has received Melbourne Art Directors Awards for his work in advertising. He was also inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
