PEEP: Glimpses of the last 4 decades of the Kerry Stokes Collection

Taking its title from an endearing installation by the Perth artist Cecile Williams, PEEPwas a partial review of tendencies in Australian and international art since the early sixties. Showcasing works from the Kerry Stokes Collection – many of which have not been publicly shown in Australia previously, it is a personal journey that emphasises the revival of imagery, content and commentary towards the end of the second millennium.

PEEP illustrates the wide diversity of art produced during the past four decades. The exhibition begun with aspects of Pop, Op and pattern painting, New Realism, Minimal and Conceptual art by Christo, Ad Dekkers, Walter de Maria, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Alfred Jensen, Philip Pearlstein, Bridget Riley, Ed Ruscha, Lucas Samaras, Miriam Stannage, Howard Taylor and Andy Warhol. A change of pace is discernable in works from the subsequent two decades. Pieces by James Angus, Luis Cruz Azaceta, Jim Campbell, Jiri Dokoupil, Anya Gallaccio, Philip Gamblen, Gilbert and George, Matthew Hunt, Tim Johnson, Tim Lewis, Michael Light, Allan McCollum, Michael McMillen, Mike and Doug Starn, Haim Steinbach, Steve Tepper, Christian de Vietri and Cecile Williams show aspects of the media explosion which has revolutionised the character of art over the past two decades. Curated by John Stringer
